#3. Gareth Bale – Birmingham
It’s easy to forget that Gareth Bale was incredibly poor when he first joined Tottenham Hotspur. The free-scoring attacking midfielder who led Wales to the European Championship semi final was once a scrawny back up left back who took 25 attempts to win a Premier League match with the club. In 2009 Bale was behind Benoit Assou-Ekotto in the pecking order and was being eyed by fellow Premier League side Birmingham. A newspaper article from 2009 claimed that Birmingham could have spent as much as £3 million to take the Welshman away from White Hart Lane, the same Welshman who cost around thirty times that figure a few years later.
