Top 10 Oldest Footballers To Play At The FIFA World Cup

#7. Jim Leighton: Age 43

Spoiler: Almost every player on this list is a goalkeeper. The next one is Jim Leighton who was 39 years 10 months and 30 days old when he turned out for Scotland in a Group A match against Morocco at France ’98. Leighton was Alex Ferguson’s goalkeeper when he was at Aberdeen, winning three Scottish Premier Division titles, four Scottish Cups, and the 1983 UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup. Leighton was consistent and reliable between the sticks and even followed Ferguson to Manchester United for a brief spell. After leaving England he returned to Scotland where he continued to play until his retirement in 2000. In all, he made 91 appearances for the Scottish National Team, making him the most-capped goalkeeper in the country’s history.
