#3. Graham Poll
Graham Poll was the most outstanding and respected official in the English game when he went to the World Cup in 2006. He returned in disgrace as a laughing stock. Poll was enjoying an outstanding tournament and was a candidate for the World Cup final when he took charge of a match between Croatia and Australia on 22 June. Poll was having a poor match, missing a number of key decisions before a moment that effectively ended his top flight refereeing career. Poll handed Josip Simunic a second yellow card and seemingly forgot to send the Croatian defender off. It took another yellow card – Simunic’s third of the match – for Poll to realise his mistake and send the player off the pitch. After that match Poll’s reputation was lost along with a lot of his respect within the game.
