#8. Jong Tae-se
We’ve all seen the strange, sometimes unsettling images of the people of North Korea openly weeping when leader Kim Jong-il died in 2011 but this event happened a year earlier and made everyone just as uncomfortable. In 2010, North Korea qualified for just their second ever FIFA World Cup, over 50 years after their first, and it was quite an occasion for the country. The first group match the country played in South Africa was against five-time winners, Brazil. The teams lined up for the customary rendition of the country’s anthems but then a strange thing happened. As the North Korean anthem blared and the camera panned across the team, striker Jong Tae-se was shown crying his eyes out.
