Since signing from Tottenham Hotspur in 2012, Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric has become one of the most indispensable players on a side that includes the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale, and Sergio Ramos. After a slow start at the club under Jose Mourinho, Carlo Ancelotti made the Croat one of the first names on the team sheet, something that has continued under Zinedine Zidane as Modric’s passing helped Real to a pair of Champions League titles. Despite this, Modric has been plagued by injuries in recent seasons and at the age of 31, he could be on the move away from the club.
According to the Spanish news outlet Don Balon via the Express, Real are preparing to send Modric to Bayern Munich. Despite becoming a fan favorite among the infamously critical Real Madrid fanbase and widely considered one of the least likely to leave the club, president Florentino Perez is reportedly considering selling Modric in the summer. According to the report, Bayern has offered Real £30 million to sign Modric, only three million less than what the Spanish side originally paid to sign him.
Perez has also reportedly created a shortlist of players to replace Modric if he is in fact sold this summer. The list includes Paris-Saint Germain’s Marco Verratti, Monaco’s Bernardo Silva, and Liverpool’s Philippe Coutinho.
Coutinho has been previously linked with a move to Spain, but to Barcelona. Coutinho’s Brazilian teammate Neymar has not been shy about the Liverpool man making the move to the Camp Nou. “A Premier League player that I would like to have in Barcelona is Coutinho,” he said last month. “I believe Philippe Coutinho is a player that would totally fit in Barcelona.” Liverpool has also been reported saying that Coutinho will not be sold under any circumstance although as history shows, if Real Madrid really wants their man, they are willing to spend big.
