Lionel Messi has taken to Facebook to express his grief about violence in Syria, revealing he is “heartbroken” on Wednesday. Barcelona superstar, who is a UNICEF ambassador, shared a status to his 88 million fans to raise awareness of the war in the Middle Eastern nation.
Un día de guerra es demasiado. Los niños de Siria llevan SEIS años sometidos a la violencia y crueldad de un conflicto…
He began his status with “A war day is too much,” before continuing with, “The children of Syria have been subjected to violence and cruelty for SIX years in a conflict that holds them hostage.” He gave a strong ending to the post, writing, “As a father and as a UNICEF’s Ambassador I am heartbroken. Add your voice to UNICEF to demand the end of the war.”
The 29-year-old has endured a dramatic ten-day period. He played a big part in Barcelona’s historic comeback against PSG on Wednesday, which saw the Catalans going through Champions League quarter finals with a 6-1 win, before falling to Deportivo La Coruna on Sunday which jeopardized their title chances.
The rumors are also going around that he has fallen out with his teammate and close friend Neymar, which can seriously impact the team’s chemistry on the pitch. With a tough fixture against Valencia looming on Sunday, Messi will have to forget all his heartaches and shift his focus to playing catch up with Real Madrid.
