Fresh off his La Liga title, Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane is reportedly looking to poach a member of England’s title-winners, Chelsea. Goal.com reports that Zidane hopes to lure defensive midfielder N’Golo Kante to the Bernabeu.
Kante emerged as a star at Leicester City during their 2015-2016 Premier League victory, shielding the back four and often winning back the balls that jump-started the Foxes’ famous counter-attacks. After heading to Chelsea, a team that finished in 8th place the previous season, and winning a second-straight title, Kante has come to be viewed as a talisman in the truest sense. It came as a surprise to no one when he won the PL’s 2016-2017 Player of the Year Award.
Real Madrid are, of course, already flush with talent, but Zidane knows that next year’s La Liga competition will be even more difficult than this year’s title-winning campaign. Nemesis Barcelona are ready to invest giant sums in order to win back the league, and crosstown rivals Atletico Madrid will move into their new stadium feeling the time is finally right for them to take the crown.
Pepe and Gareth Bale are two players reported to be considering moves away from the Bernabeu this summer, adding a sense of urgency to Zidane’s hunt for new talent. But would Kante leave Chelsea? The midfielder flourished there under Antonio Conte, but perhaps he will relish the chance to win a Spanish title, having already conquered England twice.
