#10. Alberto Aquilani – £17 million
Alberto Aquilani isn’t the most expensive player on this list, but the Italian’s flop status is largely a result of the reputation that preceded him. Roma legend Francesco Totti praised Aquilani as “potentially one of the best players in the world” when he signed for the Reds, so Liverpool fans were obviously excited to see their new man. Xabi Alonso had just been sold to Real Madrid, but there was an expectation that Aquilani was actually an upgrade on the Spaniard. Eighteen appearances and a number of injuries later, it turned out that he was not. The Italian’s Anfield career was short-lived and poor, and the Italian left for Fiorentina in 2012.
