#4. Cristiano Ronaldo – Arsenal
A young Portuguese winger called Cristiano Ronaldo had just finished his first full season with Sporting CP and was attracting the interest of every big club in the world of football. The club leading the race for the winger’s signature was Arsenal. Arsene Wenger had already got Ronaldo and his mother over to London for a tour of the training ground and a session with the first team and the deal was at an advanced stage. Then Manchester United stepped in and Ronaldo signed for the club a few weeks later. It has been claimed that the only difference was that United’s deal for the play involved more money up front where Arsenal could only afford to make a number of add-ons and clauses due to the construction of the Emirates Stadium. Maybe Arsenal would’ve won more trophies at the Emirates with Ronaldo in the side.
