#6. Andriy Shevchenko – West Ham United
In a scene more reminiscent of something out of Only Fools and Horses than football management, Harry Redknapp tells the story of how he almost signed a certain Ukrainian forward. Redknapp says he was with Frank Lampard Senior when he was West Ham manager and they were approached by a pair of Ukrainians who told them to go and look at a group of young players. Redknapp was terrified but he took a few of them for a trial and one scored against Barnet Reserves. The Ukrainians apparently wanted a million pounds for him but Lampard Senior said it was too much. The kid turned out to be an 18 year old Andriy Shevchenko who went on to win it all at club level.
