10. 5-4-1 (or 5-2-2-1)
The 2014 World Cup campaign of Costa Rica was their best ever till date- thanks to this formation. The 5-4-1 employs two attacking wingbacks who are essentially wingers with a greater defensive duty. It is almost impossible to score goals against teams employing this formation, but it’s also very easy to defend against at the same time. This formation employs two wing backs who can become wingers as well, providing crosses and increasing the area of the pitch. It is ideally used to preserve leads. While attacking, the formation can change temporarily to a 3-5-2, about which we shall know in the next countdown!
