#10. Afonso Alves
The cautionary tale for any player moving from the Eredivisie to the Premier League is that of Afonso Alves. The Brazilian forward was undoubtedly excellent in the Dutch league. For SC Heerenveen, Alves scored 48 goals in 48 matches, including 7 in one match against Heracles Almelo in 2007. So the scene was set for Afonso Alves to carry that form over to the Premier League when he signed for strugglers Middlesbrough in January 2008. ‘Boro did stay up that season but were relegated just a year later, and £12 million Alves scored just 10 Premier League goals. His record was not as bad as some people remember but his scoring feats in the Netherlands and the hefty price tag he moved for ensure his place on this list.
