#5. Charles Corver
In the 1982 World Cup semi final between West Germany and France, referee Charles Corver was at the centre of controversy for a decision he did not give. Substitute Patrick Battiston was played through by French playmaker Michel Platini in the second half and collided with German goalkeeper Harald Schumacher. Charles Corver waved play on but Battiston could not continue. In what is known as the worst tackle of all time, the flying Schumacher crashed into Battiston causing the Frenchman to lose two teeth, crack three ribs, and lose consciousness. Battiston later went into a coma and West Germany progressed to the final on penalties.
