#10. Stoke City
Messi is good, but could he do it in a cold rainy night in Stoke? Have you ever heard the aforementioned phrase before? If you have, you know exactly how difficult it is to play against Stoke. If you haven´t, let us tell you that the phrase has stood the test of time for a reason. The Premier League outfit is as stubborn as a bull when defending, making them very hard to beat. The team usually sits back deep, deploys long-balls, and gets one over their opponents, especially in their home ground, bet365 ground. However, since Stoke City heavily relies on defending, they haven´t been able to challenge for titles because of a lack of attacking depth.
It must be a tad bit surprising to find Villarreal on this list, but we must give credit where it´s due. They say that the mark of a great team is one that is difficult to beat. The Spanish outfit has conceded the least number of goals in La Liga thus far. They have only let their opponents score 12 goals in 17 matches. In the current league season, the club has a better defensive record than Real Madrid, FC Barcelona, and Atletico Madrid; that, in itself, is a remarkable achievement. Their outstanding record at the back has helped them notch the 5th position in the La Liga thus far. If the squad improves on its goal scoring record, we shouldn´t be surprised to see them give the Spanish giants a run for their money.
#8. AS Roma
The Italian outfit, AS Roma, currently occupies the 2nd position in the Italian league. And, if there´s any team that could break Juventus´ monopoly over the Serie A title, it is AS Roma. The club previously won the Serie A in the 41-42, 82-83, and 00-01 seasons. They have also won the Coppa Italia nine times and the Supercoppa Italiana title twice. The team boasts of a strong defensive line-up. They are only behind league leaders, Juventus, in terms of least goals conceded. In the current season, the club has an average possession of 59%. Rather than possessing world class defenders, AS Roma, focuses on defending right from the front as a team.
The Italian outfit, Juventus, is the reigning champions of Italy. Juventus have won the league consecutively for the past 5 seasons. There is a reason why the club has managed to achieve such a monumental success; the team is simply a great passing team and an even better defensive unit. Coached by Massimiliano Allegri, Juventus currently leads the Serie A table and looks set to win the league again. With the legendary goalkeeper, Gianluigi Buffon, between the sticks, relying on the services of world class defenders such as Dani Alves, Leonardo Bonucci, Medhi Benatia, Giorgio Chiellini, Barzagli, and Patrice Evra, it is no wonder that Juventus are a difficult squad to break down. The club has conceded the least number of goals in Serie A; they have only let in 14 goals in 18 matches thus far.
#6. Manchester City
Manchester City has been slowly climbing up the trophy standings ever since the takeover by Abu Dhabi United Group in 2008. Since the takeover, the group has funded all of Manchester City´s marquee signings and since 2011, the club has won six major honors, including the Premier League in 2012 and 2014. Thus far in their history, the club has won 4 League titles, 5 FA Cups, 3 League Cups, and 1 UEFA Cup. One of the primary reasons why Manchester City has been able to do so well is because of their defensive organization. They recently acquired the British defender, John Stones, for a record 50 million pounds! And, you know what they say, ¨you get what you pay for!¨
