According to Argentine sports media TyC Sports, Arsenal are set to trigger Cristian Pavon’s £27 million release clause in next few hours to sign him as a replacement for Alexis Sanchez.
It is understood that Manchester City have made a bid of £20m to sign Sanchez recently, whose contract with Arsenal runs out in the summer.
With the odds of the Chilean joining City this month becoming very likely, Arsenal have turned their attention on quickly getting a replacement in.
Pavon has been on the club’s radar for a while as a potential summer signing. However, Arsene Wenger is keen to get the business done now not only to directly replace Sanchez’s position, but because of his relatively cheap current release clause.
The manager is afraid the price tag would shoot up if he performs extremely well with Boca Juniors this season, or if he gets a chance to impress during the World Cup.
The 21-year-old’s been at the Argentine giants since 2014, and has scored 14 goals in 51 appearances for them in all competitions.
Similarly to Sanchez, he can operate as both a winger and a striker in a false nine position, and already has two Argentina senior caps after Jorge Sampaoli called him up in November.
Although it was expected that Pavon would stay with Boca to compete in this year’s Copa Libertadores, the recent arrival of Carlos Tevez could end up pushing him towards the exit.
