During an interview with German magazine Kicker, former Real Madrid captain Raul Gonzalez claimed that Cristiano Ronaldo has lost the extremely speedy pace he was so famous for — although he still maintains his ability. The duo played together for a season before Raul moved on to Schalke in 2010.
When asked about his thoughts on Madrid’s current number seven, Raul said, “Cristiano is playing closer to the box, and that is difficult. But please, he still maintains his ability. Perhaps he doesn’t have the same freshness and pace as before, but that is normal for his age. He may stop trying to take players on as much, but we have been spoiled.”
He was also asked to choose between Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, but Madrid’s second all time top scorer refused to pick sides. “Football is not an individual sport, it is about the team, and success comes as a team. I like both of them,” Raul said.
The 39-year-old is one of the best players to ever play for Los Blancos. After spending his younger days in the city rivals Atletico, Raul went on to score 323 goals in 741 games. He is also the second top scorer for the Spanish national team, scoring 44 goals in 102 appearances. He currently works as La Liga’s Country Manager for the U.S.
