Over the last couple of weeks, many reports have been released regarding Barcelona superstars Neymar and Lionel Messi. The star duo have been in conflict with each other as both parties are concerned about the other’s level of influence as a club. As a result, both players have been linked to Premier League moves. Neymar has been heavily linked to Premier League giants Chelsea and Manchester United, with both sides looking to improve their offenses over the summer transfer window.
According to Spanish news outlet Don Balon via the Express, United manager Jose Mourinho has revealed to his close friend, Real Madrid president Florentino Perez that the club is going ahead with a deal for the 25-year old Neymar. The Brazilian forward is said to be tired of playing in Lionel Messi’s shadow and he wishes to leave Barcelona. A move to Manchester would immediately make him the marquee star in the Premier League. Mourinho is said to have contacted Neymar in the past and United are willing to meet his £167 million release clause.
Neymar had also previously told friends that Premier League sides were courting him and that he wishes to play in a side that’s build around him instead of having to fit in a side built for another. Despite being Barcelona’s third attacking option, he has managed to thrive at the Camp Nou, even challenging Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi for the Ballon D’Or, finishing third in the voting last year.
Although Neymar’s goalscoring form has dipped this season, scoring only 15 goals in 39 appearances, he has provided 24 assists as well, helping fellow stars Messi and Luis Suarez score 45 and 32 goals respectively. In 180 matches for Barcelona, he has scored 100 goals while winning two league titles, two domestic cups and the 2014-15 Champions League.
