According to a report from Sky Sports, Manchester United’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic is set to miss the rest of the season after suffering a knee injury last night against Anderlecht. The Swede had to come off just before the extra time, as United went on to win the match 2-1.
Sky sources say that Ibrahimovic is unlikely to play again this season, which will be a huge blow for the club with the striker having scored 28 goals so far and being the top scorer for United. He was brought in on a free transfer from PSG last summer.
It is also being suggested that Ibrahimovic has played his last ever game for United, with the 35-year-old’s contract set to run out in less than two months. Although there is an option for a further 12 months extension, his future remains a doubt. “I don’t know how long I have left. Rashford, Lingard have long careers in front of them,” he said when asked about this issue before last night’s match.
Central defender Marcos Rojo also injured his knee in last night’s game, although details have not been provided for the extent of his injury. He joins fellow defenders Chris Smalling, Phil Jones, and United’s next-highest league scorer Juan Mata in the injury list. Mata, like Ibrahimovic, is set to miss the rest of the season as well with a groin surgery.
