Manchester United and Liverpool to Compete for £39 million Atletico Madrid Star

According to Calciomercato, Manchester United’s chase for Atletico Madrid star defender Jose Maria Gimenez will be disrupted by their bitter rivals Liverpool. The 22-year-old Uruguayan is a hot property for clubs struggling defensively, and has a reported £39 million release clause in his current deal.

United boss Jose Mourinho is a big fan of the youngster and has made a failed attempt to bring him on during the winter transfer window. The Portuguese wants to upgrade his back line for next season as the Red Devils plan to compete in the Champions League. Currently, the club has Eric Bailly, Chris Smalling, Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo, and Daley Blind who can all play in the center back role.

Meanwhile Liverpool are also trying to rebuild their defense as it has leaked goals to the point where they now struggle for a place in top four. Jurgen Klopp is understood to be very unhappy with the back line that has conceded 36 goals in 29 league games, and believes Gimenez can provide a solution for it.

The 22-year-old arrived to Atletico Madrid in 2013 and emerged as one of the finest young center backs in 2014/15 season after appearing in 26 matches for Los Rojiblancos. He was an undisputed starter last season and played up to 38 games. However, many different injuries and good performances from teammate Stefan Savic has kept him out of Diego Simeone’s side this season. He is the youngest Uruguayan player to debut at a world cup and still maintains a place at the national team.
