Manchester City have suffered from massive goalkeeping problems this season as summer signing Claudio Bravo has been a flop and backup Willy Caballero is considered less than reliable. Also, long-time goalkeeper Joe Hart was exiled to Torino with his departure at the end of the season a near certainty.
City are preparing to fix that problem in a huge way as according to SkySports Italia via Football Italia, they are preparing a bid for AC Milan goalkeeping phenom Gianluigi Donnarumma that will reportedly be in the region of £104 and £130 million. Not only would it break Paul Pogba’s current transfer record of £89.3 million , but it would annihalate the previous transfer record for a goalkeeper, potentially quadrupling the £32.6 million that Juventus paid Parma to sign Gianluigi Buffon back in 2001.
Despite being only 18, Donnarumma has already established himself as the number 1 goalkeeper at Milan, playing in 63 games. This season, the young goalkeeper has kept his team in contention for European football, making more saves than any other keeper in Europe’s top five leagues. Many experts feel that he will eventually surpass Buffon in terms of overall ability.
Donnarumma’s current deal is set to expire next year and after his agent Mino Raiola heavily criticized Milan’s new Chinese investors, it is less likely that the two parties will come to an agreement. Along with City, local rivals Manchester United have also been linked with Donnarumma if David De Gea receives his expected move to Real Madrid.
