Barcelona stars have revealed they would approve the appointment of Juan Carlos Unzue as the manager of the club, as they spoke highly about him at various events recently. Luis Enrique is set to leave after this season and the Catalans are desperate to find a new man in the hot seat.
During a TAG Heuer promotional event, the club captain Andres Iniesta said, “He’s already worked as a coach in the past. There’s still time to go before we know who will be the manager, but Juan Carlos knows how everything works. He is with us every day and like I said he has coached other teams, too.” He concluded with, “He’s a well-prepared, capable coach and at the moment he’s looking forward to ending the season well and hitting our targets.”
Meanwhile during a talk on nutrition at Casa Ametller Origen, Gerard Pique added, “Unzue’s capable of doing the job.” Ivan Rakitic also came in support for the 49-year-old. Speaking to Cadena Ser, Rakitic echoed the two two superstars’ words, saying, “I have a really good relationship with Unzue. He knows us all and we have complete confidence in him. Luis Enrique has his coaching team, but Unzue has his ideas. The philosophy is the same, but each manager adds their own touches.”
Unzue, current assistant manager and the right-hand man of Enrique, knows the inside out of the club. The former goalkeeper spent two seasons in Camp Nou during his playing days, before immediately returning after retirement to spend five years as the goalkeeping coach. He left for head coach positions in Numancia and Racing Santander afterwards, and eventually came back in 2014 with Enrique.
