Barcelona forward Lionel Messi is one of the best players in football history and the marquee superstar on a club full of them. As a result, the Argentine has massive influence in club operations. With his contract set to expire in 2018 and Barcelona keen to have him sign an extension in the near future, it has been reported that Messi is concerned about the club’s future and that he would like them to sign new players before he agrees to extend with the club.
According to Spanish outlet Diario Gol via the Express, Messi has given Barcelona a list of players that he would like them to sign in the summer transfer window. He has specifically requested that the club signs a new striker because he prefer to play in a deeper role. Some of the players on his wish list are Atletico Madrid’s Antoine Griezmann, Monaco’s Bernardo Silva and Kylian Mbappe and Borussia Dortmund’s Ousmane Dembele. Arsenal defender Hector Bellerin is also on the list.
On the flip side, he also has requested that the club sell midfielders Arda Turan and Andre Gomes along with striker Paco Alcacer. Other players the article suggests may be on the move are defenders Lucas Digne and Jeremy Mathieu along with midfielder Denis Suarez.
This is not the first time in recent weeks that Messi has used his considerable influence on the club. Earlier this month, rumors stated that he was involved in a row with Neymar over the potential acquisition of Liverpool and Brazil midfielder Philippe Coutinho. Messi was said to be worried that Coutinho’s arrival might mean Neymar’s influence would increase at his expense.
