Liverpool boss Jürgen Klopp said Friday that he is confident Emre Can will extend his contract with Liverpool. The midfielder has had a hot-and-cold season at Anfield but made headlines the world over with his fantastic bicycle-kick game-winning goal last weekend.
Klopp seems to feel the goal had an impact. “After his bicycle kick probably everyone wants him to stay,” he quipped to the press. He also joked that he had watched video of Can’s sumptuous Watford goal hundreds of times.
The 23-year-old German has made 29 appearances in the Premier League this season, benefitting from the fact that captain Jordan Henderson has been sidelined with injuries of late. He began contract renewal talks earlier this season, but until Thursday there had been little indication of how they were proceeding.
Now, however, it appears the club is confident it will secure Can’s services for years to come. “I think it is no secret how much I like Emre,” Klopp said of his countryman. “It is two partners with big respect for each other.”
