After finishing in 10th place last season, most people expected Chelsea to struggle to make top-four with many predicting one of the two Manchester clubs to be the main title challengers. Exceeding all expectations, after initial struggles, Chelsea has ridden the 3-4-3 formation to run away with the Premier League, currently sitting 10 points above second-place Tottenham. Despite the success with the current roster, first-year manager Antonio Conte has expressed interest in overhauling the roster, adding reinforcements for next year’s Champions League run.
According to Metro, Chelsea are interested in signing Bayern Munich left-back David Alaba in the summer. Valued at around £35 million according to Transfermarkt, Alaba is considered to be one of the top full-backs in Europe. Alaba broke into the Bayern first team back in 2010 and he has played over 250 games for the Bavarian side, winning five Bundesliga titles and a Champions League.
Alaba’s versatility is another aspect that makes him a valuable player. He has spent time playing in central defense and central midfield along with both wing positions. With Chelsea’s preferred formation relying heavily on wing-backs, Alaba would be a massive improvement over current left wing-back Marcos Alonso. Still only 24 years old, Alaba provides an attacking threat to go along with his strong defense. In 55 games for the Austrian national team, he has scored 11 goals.
Conte has also expressed interest in signing Arsenal striker Alexis Sanchez as his top target this summer. Other players linked to Chelsea include Juventus left-back Alex Sandro, Southampton defender Virgil Van Dijk, and Monaco midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko. Conte is close to extending his contract with Chelsea although he wants to be assured that management will spend big in the summer to ensure that the club is prepared for Champions League football.
