Turkish local media Sözcü has made surprising claim today that Galatasaray are ready to offer €5 million for the Barcelona defender Javier Mascherano and will hand him a two-year contract. The Argentine is currently an important starter in his club, having made 35 appearances so far this season for Blaugrana.
According to the report, Galatasaray are rejuvenating their defensive line and will target Mascherano who is no longer in the plans for Barcelona next season. The Istanbul outfit are currently fourth in Turkish Super League and have been leaking goals due to a weak defense. They are confident that first team football can lure the 33-year-old, who’s been with Barcelona since 2010.
The outlet also reports that an initial contact has been made and it turned out to be positive. The Argentine is believed to want a starting role in the national team for the 2018 World Cup, and playing regularly for club will be an important factor.
Barcelona are ready for a huge shake-up next season after recent humiliating away losses to PSG and Juventus in Europe. The club is looking for a young center-back and already have an option to bring in Colombian international Yerry Mina after the World Cup. Athletic Bilbao defender Yeray Alvarez and Atletico Madrid’s Jose Maria Gimenez are also in the look-out for the Catalans, meaning there might not be a spot for Mascherano anymore.
