Leicester City’s unprecedented run to the Premier League title bought out the best in many of the side’s players. Striker Jamie Vardy scored 24 goals and looked like a world beater, midfielder N’Golo Kante went from an unknown to the next Makelele, and possibly the most surprising performance was winger Riyad Mahrez who went from an unknown to PFA player of the year. Despite his performance significantly declining this season, his meteoric rise last season means that many large clubs are still interested in signing the Algerian.
According to Spanish news site Sport via the Express, Barcelona are looking to sign Mahrez in the summer. With Leicester’s form reverting to norm and the Foxes in the middle of a relegation battle, it has been reported that Mahrez is keen on leaving the club, with Barcelona his preferred destination.
Mahrez would not come cheap as despite his desire to leave, Leicester are reluctant to sell their star winger, who signed a new contract that runs until 2020. The report suggests that his transfer fee would be in the range of £34 million.
Barcelona are set to be very active in the summer transfer window as reports have come out saying that Lionel Messi is concerned about the club’s future and that he wants to see major signings made before he decides on a contract extension. Although Mahrez was not on the list of players he submitted to the club, his signing would be a significant one nonetheless.
