Barcelona scouts were in London last week, scouting players such as Arsenal’s Hector Bellerin and Chelsea’s Cesar Azpilicueta. Now, according to Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo via Metro, Barcelona have been offered the chance to sign another of their scouting targets in the transfer window, Chelsea midfielder Nemanja Matic. Matic’s representatives have been offering him to different clubs in an attempt to gain leverage in contract negotiations with Chelsea.
Barca are said to be interested in the Serbian as cover for Sergio Busquets and that they admire his ability to score goals and his physicality. Despite this, Chelsea are said to still be highly interested in extending Matic’s contract and the article says that manager Antonio Conte would like to retain his services. Although Matic is said to be interested in moving to Barcelona, Chelsea are preparing to offer him a significant increase on his current £90,000 a week wages.
This season, Matic has been half of Chelsea’s defensive midfield duo with N’Golo Kante, starting 22 out of 27 Premier League matches, pushing Cesc Fabregas out of the first team. Along with his usual defensive contributions, Matic has impressed offensively as well, providing six assists in the league, one behind Pedro and Fabregas’ team-leading seven assists.
With Antonio Conte impressing in his first season as manager, leading Chelsea to the top of the Premier League table and the FA Cup semi-finals, the article says that Chelsea are willing to support the Italian in the transfer market to improve the roster for next year’s expected Champions League run.
